There is an important difference between the best age to identify an orthodontic problem and the best age to treat it.
Some orthodontic problems are easier to recognize once the first permanent molars and incisors have erupted. Certain problems can also benefit from treatment while a child is still growing.
An early examination can reveal things parents may not be able to see at home, such as:
- Permanent teeth developing or erupting in an unusual position
- Missing or extra teeth
- Significant crowding or space problems
- Crossbites or underbites
- Significant overjet or protruding front teeth
- Differences in upper and lower jaw development
- Functional shifts when the child bites
- Oral habits that are affecting the teeth or bite
Finding one of these concerns does not automatically mean treatment should begin. It gives us information that helps us decide whether treatment, observation or further evaluation is most appropriate.
Every child’s development is different. If something here sounds familiar, the next step isn’t braces. It’s a conversation with Dr. Sharp.
